Frequently asked questions

What is an ig.me link?

ig.me is Instagram's short-link domain. The pattern ig.me/m/USERNAME opens a Direct Message thread with that account when it is tapped on a phone with the Instagram app installed. On desktop, the link may open the profile or the web inbox instead, depending on Instagram's current behavior.

What is the difference between an ig.me link and an instagram.com link?

An ig.me/m/ link is meant to open a DM conversation directly, which saves the visitor a tap. An instagram.com/USERNAME link opens the profile, where the visitor taps Message. Use the profile link when you want people to see your posts first.

Can I add a pre-filled message to an Instagram DM link?

No. Instagram does not support pre-filled message text in ig.me links, unlike WhatsApp's wa.me links. Click-to-message ads configured in Meta Ads Manager can show starter prompts, but that is an ad setting, not a link feature.

Why does my ig.me link open the profile instead of the DM?

Instagram decides where the link lands, and it often opens the profile or inbox on desktop or when the app is not installed. Test the link on a phone with the app before you print it or put it in an ad.

Do I need a business account to use an ig.me link?

No. The link works for any Instagram account that can receive messages. To answer those DMs with a tool like InstantReply, connect an Instagram professional account (Business or Creator) to it.

Why might an Instagram DM link be flagged?

Link checkers and Instagram's own spam systems can flag links to new or reported accounts, or links shared in bulk. Post real content on the account first and avoid mass-sharing the link in unrelated places. If a link is flagged, test it again from a clean account.
