What is an ig.me link?
ig.me is Instagram's official short-link domain. The URL pattern ig.me/m/USERNAME is a deep-link that opens straight into a Direct Message thread with that user on mobile, and lands on the user's profile on desktop with a Message button visible.
What is the difference between an ig.me link and an instagram.com link?
An ig.me/m/ link opens a DM conversation directly on mobile (one less tap). An instagram.com/USERNAME link opens the user's profile page where the visitor still needs to tap Message. ig.me has a higher conversion to actual conversation; instagram.com is better when you want visitors to see the profile first.
Can I add a pre-filled message to an Instagram DM link?
Not for personal accounts. Instagram does not officially support pre-filled message text in ig.me links. For business accounts running click-to-message ads through Meta Ads Manager, you can configure starter messages on the ad itself, but that is an ad feature, not a link feature.
Why does my ig.me link open the profile instead of the DM on desktop?
Direct deep-linking to DMs is a mobile-only feature. On desktop, Instagram opens the profile page because the web client does not support direct DM links from external URLs. Mobile users get the smoother experience.
Does the ig.me link work for both personal and business Instagram accounts?
Yes for both. The recipient does not need a business account for the link to work. However, if you want to receive and reply to DMs from a tool like Instant Reply, you need an Instagram Business account connected to a Facebook Page.
Why are some Instagram DM links blocked or flagged?
Instagram and external link checkers sometimes flag ig.me links that point to accounts marked as spam or to brand-new accounts with no posts. If your link is flagged, post real content on the account first and avoid mass-sharing the link in low-quality contexts.
