AI sales agent for Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger DMs: what it is and what to check
The short answer
An AI sales agent for DMs answers buyers in Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger from your own prices and policies, qualifies them, follows up inside the platform's messaging window and hands the chat to a person when it is unsure or asked. Unlike a flow chatbot it copes with off-script questions; unlike an outbound AI SDR it works on people who message you first.

What Instant Reply's agent does
- Answers from your knowledge. A check with no model involved blocks any price, link or phone number that is not in your knowledge, settings or a verified tool result.
- You choose how much it does alone. Approval holds every draft for a person, and a buyer who asks for a person is always routed to one.
- Not the right tool for visual comment-to-DM campaigns (use a flow builder such as ManyChat) or cold outbound to a list (look at an AI SDR).
- Build and test your own AI free
- 7-day free trial on yearly plans. Card at checkout, nothing charged until day 8
- Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp in one inbox
AI sales agent vs chatbot vs AI SDR
Three kinds of product share the word "AI" and the word "sales". They solve different problems.
- Who starts the conversation
- AI sales agent for DMsThe buyer: a DM, a comment, a story reply, an ad click.
- Flow chatbotThe buyer, usually through a keyword or button.
- Outbound AI SDRYou: cold email, LinkedIn or calls to a prospect list.
- How it decides what to say
- AI sales agent for DMsA language model reads the whole thread and your knowledge, inside rules you set.
- Flow chatbotA decision tree you build: trigger, buttons, fixed replies.
- Outbound AI SDRA model writes and sequences outreach from list data.
- Off-script questions
- AI sales agent for DMsAnswers them, or hands off when it cannot ground the answer.
- Flow chatbotFalls back to a default reply or a human.
- Outbound AI SDRHandles replies to its own outreach; not built for inbound DMs.
- Main risk
- AI sales agent for DMsInventing a price, a link or a promise. Look for hard guards.
- Flow chatbotDead ends and robotic answers that lose the buyer.
- Outbound AI SDRDeliverability, spam complaints and brand damage at volume.
- Where it lives
- AI sales agent for DMsInstagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and similar inboxes.
- Flow chatbotThe same channels, plus website widgets.
- Outbound AI SDREmail, LinkedIn and the phone.
- Best for
- AI sales agent for DMsBusinesses whose buyers ask prices, send voice notes and photos, and want an answer now.
- Flow chatbotCampaigns with predictable steps: lead magnets, comment-to-DM links.
- Outbound AI SDRB2B teams that need more top-of-funnel meetings.

How Instant Reply's AI sales agent handles a DM
Ten things that happen between a buyer's message and the reply, as built, not as marketed.
- 1Reads everything the buyer sentText, voice notes (transcribed) and images (described) on every paid plan; documents too from Growth. The reply uses that content, not just the last line of text.
- 2Answers from your knowledgeYour FAQs, documents, links and Shopify catalog. A knowledge-only setting makes it ignore general knowledge and answer only from your sources.
- 3Sells like a person, not a scriptShort qualification and objection-handling directives (calibrated questions, naming the concern, a clear next step) are added to the prompt instead of a decision tree.
- 4Cannot invent a price, a link or a phone numberBefore sending, a deterministic check (no model involved) confirms every money amount, URL and phone number in the reply appears in your knowledge, settings or a verified tool result. Customer messages do not count as proof. A failing reply is regenerated once, then replaced by a neutral reply and handed to a person.
- 5Does not pretend to actIf a reply claims an action it did not take, such as booking a slot or sending an email, it is discarded and the conversation goes to a person who can actually do it.
- 6Knows when to step backEach reply gets a confidence score; below the threshold (0.70 by default) the AI follows your low-confidence setting. A buyer who asks for a person is always routed to one, in English or Arabic phrasing.
- 7You choose how much it does aloneApproval: every draft waits for a person. AI can hand off (default): it replies and loops in a human when asked or unsure. Full auto: it replies on its own, and an explicit request for a person still reaches one.
- 8Follows up without naggingUp to 3 nudges, only inside Meta's 24-hour window from the buyer's last message. A closing "ok thanks" stops the sequence.
- 9Keeps the platform rulesOutbound sends go through a compliance gate that enforces the 24-hour window on Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp, template-only WhatsApp outside it, one private reply per comment within 7 days, and a hard block after STOP or unsubscribe, which is detected in several languages including Arabic.
- 10Books and gets paidCalendar booking inside the DM with Google Calendar availability (Pro), a WhatsApp payment-link button when you set a checkout URL, and one-way CRM sync to HubSpot, Pipedrive, Notion, Airtable or Zoho (Pro).
10 questions to ask any AI sales agent vendor
- Ask what stops it from inventing a price or a payment link. A prompt instruction is not a guard; a check before sending is.
- Send it a voice note and a product photo. Does the reply use what was in them?
- Ask a question your knowledge base cannot answer. Does it guess, or hand off with a holding reply?
- Type "can I talk to a person" in your customers' language. Does a human get the conversation?
- Find out what the bill follows: contacts, conversations, AI replies or seats, and what happens at the limit (overage, pause or block).
- Check how follow-ups respect the 24-hour window and how many it sends before stopping.
- Reply STOP. Is the contact blocked from every later send, including broadcasts?
- Turn on an approval or draft mode and see whether your team can edit before sending.
- Ask which plan includes WhatsApp, booking and CRM sync, not just the AI.
- Test with ten real past conversations before connecting a live channel.
What Meta allows in 2026
- WhatsApp. Since January 15, 2026, WhatsApp's Business Solution terms bar general-purpose AI assistants. Meta told TechCrunch the change targets AI providers distributing assistants, not businesses using AI to serve their own customers. Outside the 24-hour window, only approved templates can be sent.
- Instagram and Messenger. Meta's policy gives businesses up to 24 hours to respond to a user; the Human Agent tag lets a person reply manually within 7 days. A private reply to a comment is one message, sent within 7 days of the comment.
- What that means for an agent. Automated follow-ups have to land inside the 24-hour window, and the agent must stop when it closes. Instant Reply clamps every automated nudge to that window.
Honest limits
What Instant Reply's AI sales agent does not do
- It is not an outbound prospecting tool. It works on people who message you, and on WhatsApp broadcasts to contacts who opted in.
- It cannot message outside the platforms' windows. After 24 hours without a reply, WhatsApp needs an approved template and Instagram follow-ups stop.
- The hard guard covers money amounts, links and phone numbers. Other facts depend on the quality of your knowledge base, which is why approval mode exists.
- AI replies are capped by plan (10,000 / 35,000 / 100,000 a month). At the cap the AI pauses and you are emailed; nothing is billed as overage.
- There is no visual campaign-flow canvas. Comment-to-DM rules and follow-up sequences cover most of it; Pro adds a workflow builder for triggers, branches and stage moves.
- WhatsApp and Telegram start on Growth ($129); calendar booking and CRM sync on Pro ($349).
If your job is visual comment-to-DM campaigns, a flow builder such as ManyChat is the better tool; if you need cold outbound to a prospect list, look at an AI SDR. See the where-ManyChat-wins section.
AI sales agents: common questions
What is an AI sales agent?
Software that holds sales conversations for a business using a language model: it answers product and price questions, qualifies the buyer, handles objections, proposes a next step such as a booking or a payment link, and hands the conversation to a person when needed. For messaging, it works inside Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger DMs.
What is the difference between an AI sales agent and a chatbot?
A classic chatbot follows a decision tree you build: a trigger, buttons and fixed replies. An AI sales agent reads the whole conversation, including voice notes and photos, and writes a new answer from your knowledge each time, so it copes with questions nobody scripted. The trade-off is risk: an agent needs guards against inventing prices or promises, which a fixed tree does not.
What is the difference between an AI sales agent and an AI SDR?
An AI SDR does outbound prospecting: it researches a list and sends cold emails or LinkedIn messages to book meetings. An AI sales agent for DMs works inbound, on people who already messaged you on Instagram, WhatsApp or Messenger. Many vendors use the labels loosely, so judge by who starts the conversation and on which channel.
Can an AI sales agent reply to Instagram DMs and comments?
Yes, through Meta's official Instagram messaging API. Meta's policy gives businesses up to 24 hours to respond to a user, and its private-replies API allows one private message per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment. An agent that follows the rules stops automated follow-ups when the window closes; a person can still reply manually for up to 7 days with Meta's Human Agent tag.
Are AI sales agents allowed on WhatsApp in 2026?
Yes, for a business's own customer conversations. WhatsApp's Business Solution terms have barred general-purpose AI assistants, such as public chatbots from AI labs, since January 15, 2026, but Meta told TechCrunch the change does not affect businesses using AI to serve their customers. Outside the 24-hour window, WhatsApp still requires an approved template.
Will an AI sales agent make up prices or links?
Language models can, which is why the guard matters more than the model. In Instant Reply, any money amount, URL or phone number in a reply must already appear in your knowledge base, settings or a verified tool result; otherwise the reply is regenerated once and then replaced by a neutral message with a human handoff. Ask every vendor how theirs works.
What happens when the AI does not know the answer?
In Instant Reply it depends on your settings. Below the confidence threshold (0.70 by default) the AI follows your low-confidence mode, for example a holding reply and a ticket for your team. In approval mode nothing sends until a person approves the draft. A buyer who asks for a person always gets one.
How much does an AI sales agent for DMs cost?
Pricing models differ more than prices. Instant Reply is a flat $59, $129 or $349 a month with unlimited contacts and capped AI replies. ManyChat's AI starts on Pro at $39 month-to-month for 2,500 active contacts, then per extra contact (October 18, 2026). Respond.io's AI Agents start on Growth at $199 month-to-month for 1,000 active contacts (October 18, 2026).
Will an AI sales agent replace my sales team?
It replaces the first reply and the repetitive middle: prices, availability, what is included, the follow-up nobody had time to send. People still close complex or high-value deals, handle complaints and approve anything risky. The useful setup is the AI answering at 2am and handing warm conversations to a person with the context attached.
